Jesse James was born on his family's farm just northeast of the future townsite in 1847, nine years before Centerville was even platted. For more than a century after incorporation, Kearney barely grew — 396 residents in 1870, still only 523 by 1930, and just 1,790 as late as 1990. Then the town's population took off, reaching 10,404 by 2020, more than a fivefold increase in thirty years.
