From Lickskillet to a Two-County Town

Oak Grove's post office has been in continuous operation since 1840, but for decades the settlement itself was known as Lickskillet rather than Oak Grove. It wasn't formally platted under its current name until 1878, taking its new name from a grove of oak trees near the original town site. Oak Grove is also unusual in this service area for straddling two counties, Jackson and Lafayette, rather than sitting entirely within one. Growth stayed modest until the mid-20th century (just 2,025 residents in 1970) then more than doubled in a single decade to 4,067 by 1980, part of a roughly 40x increase since the 1880 census. The two kinds of settling we see around Oak Grove look different enough that you can usually sort your own slab before we arrive. That is fill still compacting under its own weight, and it often shows up within the first several years rather than after decades. On an older farmhouse property the drop is gradual and it follows water. A walk that has tipped toward the low side of the yard, a step slab that has rolled away from the house, a shop pad that dishes where runoff crosses it year after year. That one is clay working wet to dry, plus a drainage path nobody corrected. Both end at the same missing support underneath, which what causes voids under a concrete slab explains, but the newer one usually stays put once lifted and the older one needs the water dealt with too.
