Grandview's post office opened in 1889, but the city itself didn't incorporate until February 6, 1912. The name comes from the view off the elevated town site overlooking the surrounding farmland. That farmland was more than scenery: Harry S. Truman's family farm sat on the edge of Grandview, and Truman worked those fields for over a decade before entering politics. His mother, Martha Ellen Young Truman, still lived on the property decades later. A well-known photo shows then-Senator Truman visiting her in Grandview in July 1944, right after his nomination as vice president. Grandview stayed a small farm town through the 1940s, then changed fast: population went from 410 in 1920 to 6,027 by 1960, then nearly tripled again to 17,456 by just 1970.
