Archie's history has two distinct threads. The first is its 1880 founding along the Missouri Pacific Railroad's extension through southern Cass County, with local tradition crediting the town's name to Archie Talmadge, son of a railroad official. The second is stranger: on August 10, 1932, a meteorite fell just outside town, and a fragment of it now sits in the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History bearing Archie's name. Unlike towns that grew in one explosive decade and flattened out, Archie's population grew across four census periods — 300 in 1950, 525 by 1970, 753 by 1980, 1,170 by 2010, and 1,268 by 2020 — with the largest jump in the 30 years between 1980 and 2010.
