In the summer of 1856, a group of German immigrants organized a colonization society in Chicago: starting with about 50 members and growing to roughly 600 stockholders: with plans to found a settlement somewhere in the West. A locating committee left in March 1857, chose a site along the Kansas River, and purchased an 800-acre tract from Shawnee Chief Paschal Fish, the site's original owner. The new town was named Eudora in honor of Chief Fish's daughter. A connection the town still marks today with a statue erected in 2011. Eudora grew fast through the late 1800s, from 572 residents in 1880 to nearly 1,500 by 1950, then growth largely leveled off for decades before K-10 and the town's location between Lawrence and the Kansas City metro triggered a second, much larger wave of growth that has carried the population past 6,400 today.
